Weekly Gems from Ronda Gates. |
This week I will deliver the manuscript for my forthcoming book, BEAUTY, MORE THAN SKIN DEEP. Yes, this is a stretch for me-a delicious excursion to a different area of women's health promotion. The 200 page paperback book is filled with charts, entertaining stories, useful information and tips, tips, tips about skin care. Although it is oriented to women it is a great read for men too. This week you get a "tease"-some of the more than 100 tips that will fill the pages of this 'quick read." Although what you read below is about skin care, the title speaks for itself. True beauty comes from the inside out, not the outside in. SKIN SAVVY Your skin is more than a covering; it is a barometer that registers the state of your health and reveals the story of your life. SKIN SAVVY The size of your oil glands determines the size of your pores. It's genetics. SKIN SAVVY You can help prevent excessive dry skin when you moisturize indoor air by plugging in a humidifier, place a damp towel or pan of water near a heat source or, best of all, by surrounding yourself with plants. SKIN SAVVY You can make a refreshing face spritzer by filling a spray mister with mineral water. Store it in the refrigerator to keep it cool then grab it for a quick pick me up when your skin feels hot or dry. SKIN SAVVY If you have oily skin don't use harsh cleansers to get rid of excess oil. Instead, wash the face with mild soap more often. SKIN SAVVY Waterproof kitchen gloves provide protection from detergents and the hot and cold water you use to wash dishes. They can also prevent the skin on your hands from breathing and trap perspiration. If you plan to wear gloves for a long time, remove them every 15 minutes or so to let the skin on your hands "breathe". SKIN SAVVY Lips contain few oil and sweat glands and no melanin to protect them from moisture-robbing UV rays. Instead of using lip balms that contain camphor, menthol or phenol, use products with moisture-sealing ingredients and SPF protection. SKIN SAVVY One in 75 Americans will be diagnosed with potentially deadly malignant melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer, before they die. ABOUT BEAUTY IS MORE THAN SKIN DEEP The book is a "contract" book. It is being delivered to my favorite non profit foundation, Speaking of Women's Health. Each year this fast-growing organization hosts one day conferences in cities nationwide (35 in 2001) to deliver education + entertainment about women's health issues in a "we want to pamper you" environment. Their mission: SWH is dedicated to educating women to make informed decisions about their health, well-being, and safety. Lifetime Television for Women is the title sponsor and Proctor and Gamble is the national sponsor for these events which, in my long experience on a variety of conference programs, are nothing short of extraordinary.
