Walking

Walking every day can significantly improve the health of your older friends. A 12 year study focused on 707 non-smoking men between the ages of 61 and 81 who were able to walk.

Those who walked just two miles a day-even at a leisurely pace-reduced their risk of death from all causes by half. For example, those who did not walk were 2.5 times as likely to die from all types of cancer as those who walked at least two miles a day. In the past, some fitness experts questioned the value of such low intensity exercise. They were wrong.

My office is 4 blocks from a neighborhood grocery store, post office, printer, office supply store and bank. Sometimes (especially in the PacNW rainy weather we've enjoyed for the last 3 months) it's pretty tempting to make that daily route in the car. By walking I figure I burn about 100 calories. Over the course of a month I use a pound of calories. In the case of exercise, something is almost always better than nothing.
